Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency
Education for the Arts
is a 10 year old arts program through the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency. We are fine arts based, interested in teaching students arts disciplines for personal expression and growth. I started in 1997 teaching video production to high school kids. Our classes are part of their school day so we see them Monday through Friday. I soon expanded it to film when we picked up an Auricon, the Scoopic, a 6 plate Steenbeck, and a bunch of Super 8 film cameras and editors. In 2001 we opened our computer lab downtown in the Epic Center, and switched all our video over to digital. We have 20 Apple G5's with cinema display screens running iMovie and Final Cut HD. The kids shoot on Canon XL 1's and GL 2's. We also have Canon and Nikon still cameras, and Adobe Photoshop. A music composition class also uses the lab.Yes, these kids are very talented. They graduate and spread out all over the country and the world. Kalamazoo has a strong commitment to the arts, backing it up with grant money for artists, educational institutions, and students. My boss's philosophy -- Jeffrey Harkins -- is to do whatever is in the best interest of the students, and he means it.

Epic CenterThe Epic Center
was conceived to support and celebrate the arts and to act as home and focal point for the entire arts community. The four-story building houses two modern performance spaces, offices for 11 cultural organizations, a community box office, a restaurant and a retail store. The Epic’s architecture and design complement the works of art shown in its spaces. The Epic Center’s permanent collection is displayed in the public areas and comprises work by artists from Greater Kalamazoo.

The Kalamazoo Film Society • KFS
is a volunteer, registered non-profit organization which was formed in 1988 to enhance the Greater Kalamazoo area's film viewing opportunities. Our mission is to provide the community with first-run, world class cinema which includes both independent and foreign films that would otherwise not be offered locally. We provide a diverse selection of films, ranging from the most recent winners at Cannes, Sundance and other film festivals to the best that the American Independent film movement has to offer. From a humble, almost underground, beginning, we continue to grow into the most cutting-edge, alternative film experience in town. Our films are shown one weekend a month in a newly refurbished theater on the campus of Western Michigan University. It features brand-new 35 mm projection, a new screen and sound system, 194 comfortable seats, air conditioning, free parking and admission prices designed solely to cover expenses.
We encourage you to attend our films and help keep quality cinema alive and well in Kalamazoo. If you are interested in becoming a KFS member, please click here or on our membership link located on the left of this page.
